The Celtic Religion
Gaelic is a branch of the Celtic religion. The Celtic religion is a polyotheistic religion, meaning they believe in many Gods and Goddesses. Unlike the Greek and Roman polyotheistic beliefs, the Celtic Gods shared many responsibilities. They shared their duties over certian aspects such as love, war, fertitlity, etc., between many Gods instead of just one. In recent studies, they found that the responsibility of war was shared amongst "69 or more" Gods and Godesses. The Celtic religion first spread around Euroupe around 1000 B.C.
These Gods and goddesses romed the land in many different forms, such as fairies, deities, and other common objects like trees, flowers, and waterfalls. They also appeared to be in forms of animals. They believed that they must treat the animals right and respectfully because there is a stong chance that it may be one of the Gods. Celts also believed that animals like cattle, horses, pigs, dogs, deer, bears, snakes and birds were protected by gods, or more commonly, goddesses. An example to show the importantce of these animals is, the birds. They believed that when the birds sang, it was related to different types of healing powers. These healing powerrs were linked to the supernatural powers that the Gods and Goddesses had.
There are legends and stories as to how the Celtic religion failed because chrsitianity had spead over the land of Ireland, Scottland, and other Gaelic areas, but Gaelic and Celtic religions are still around today. It is believed that certian parts of christianity was influenced by the Celtic religion such as a sense of nearness to the spirit world, a sense in a mystical understand versus structure, a belief in the closeness of eternity to everyday life, a weak belief in the idea that humans are tainted by original sin and a tendency to personify evil forces.
